ALIENS ON VACATION (Brilliance Audio, 2011) is a fun, wacky read that boys 10 to 13 will totally love. Because, really, who wouldn't want to have a hippie grandma who runs a Bed & Breakfast that caters to visitors from ... far, far away?
Scrub (aka David) doesn't, at least at first. He's sent to live in the Pacific Northwest for the summer when his busy parents have conflicting schedules. When he first arrives at the Intergalactic Bed and Breakfast, he thinks the groovy 60's meets Star Wars theme is meant to lure wacky alien-obsessed tourists. After all, this is the land of Big Foot and other X-File kind of sightings. Sure the guests are a little odd ... okay, downright strange, but there are no such thing as little green men from outer space. Right?
When Scrub discovers aliens aren't always little green men and that his grandma really DOES host beings from other worlds, he ends up helping his grandma avoid the suspicious eye of the town sheriff by disguising the new arrivals so they can "blend in" with the humans. Not the easiest first job.
Scrub really just wants to make some friends, play some hoops and maybe win a bet with his friend back home by kissing a girl first -- but as he gets to know some of the local kids, he realizes his social life may be the thing that blow his grandmother's secret wide open.
Clete Barrett Smith captures the insecurities and dreams of boys on the verge of manhood perfectly. From bullies to popularity to girls, oh and babysitting three alien "kids" who look like trees, Scrub's summer is unlike any other. First in the Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast series, with Book 2, ALIEN ON A RAMPAGE, coming out in June.
